Eligibility
The Erasmus+ Programme offers two categories of scholarships for participating in an Erasmus+ Joint Master Degree programme (JMD):A) Scholarships for scholarship holders from Erasmus+ partner countries (scholarhsip of "category A") can be awarded to applicants who:
a) are nationals of a country other than an Erasmus+ programme country (see definition below) andb)
who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity
(studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the
last five years in one of the Erasmus+ programme countries.
The "last five years" are defined as the five years preceding the last day of February in the desired year of student intake. For applicants applying for student intake in 2016, this is the period 01 March 2012 to 28 February 2017.
Erasmus+ programme countries are defined as the 28 member states of the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Turkey .
The "last five years" are defined as the five years preceding the last day of February in the desired year of student intake. For applicants applying for student intake in 2016, this is the period 01 March 2012 to 28 February 2017.
Erasmus+ programme countries are defined as the 28 member states of the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Turkey .
B) Scholarships for scholarship holders from Erasmus+ programme countries (scholarships of "category B") can be awarded to applicants who do not fulfil the criteria for scholarship holders from erasmus+ partner countries defined above.
Students fulfilling the eligibility criteria for both categories – e.g. students with a double nationality – must select the category of their choice. As a result, they are entitled to apply only to one of the two categories of scholarship at a time.
For both categories the further eligibility criteria apply:
- Students applying for a JMD scholarship for a specific academic intake are not allowed to submit a scholarship application to more than three JMD consortia.
- Students who have already obtained a JMD scholarship or an Erasmus Mundus Master Course scholarship are not eligible to apply for an additional scholarship under the JMD action.
- Students benefiting from an JMD scholarship cannot benefit from another EU grant while pursuing their studies in an Erasmus+ JMD.
Amount of Scholarships
MARIHE is a four semester (two years) Erasmus Mundus Masters Course. Its mobility scheme includes a mandatory mobility period to a third country full partner, as all students in MARIHE spend a lecture period in 3rd semester at consortium partner Beijing Normal University (BNU) in China. Therefore for MARIHE the scholarship scheme is the following:1) Contribution to participation costs
- for a scholarship holder from Erasmus+ Partner countries ("category A"): 6.000 € per year
- for a scholarship holder from Erasmus+ Programme countries ("category
B"): 4.500 € per year. In addition to that MARIHE consortium will apply
a fee waiver for the remaining participation costs.
As a result, for both types of scholarship holders, the Erasmus Mundus scholarship will cover all participation costs in MARIHE (12.000 € for the whole programme / two years).

2) Contribution to travel and installation costs
The contribution to travel and installation costs takes into account the country of residence of the scholarship holder (at the time of application to the JMD). As a proof of residence, consortia may ask from applicants residence certifcates and certificates regarding the applicant occupational or educational situation.- for a scholarship holder who is resident of an Erasmus+ Programme Country: 1.000 € travel costs per year
- for a scholarship holder who is resident of an Erasmus+ Partner Country whose location is less than 4.000 km away from the HEI coordinating the JMD (in the case of MARIHE, this is Danube University Krems, Austria): 2.000 € travel costs per year plus a one-time payment of 1.000 € installation costs at the beginning of the JMD
- for a scholarship holder who is resident of an Erasmus+ Partner Country whose location is more than 4.000 km away from the HEI coordinating the JMD (in the case of MARIHE, this is Danube University Krems, Austria): 3.000 € travel costs per year plus a one-time payment of 1.000 € installation costs at the beginning of the JMD
3) Contribution to subsistence costs ("monthly allowance")
- for all scholarship holders: 1.000 € per month for the entire duration of the JMD study programme (for MARIHE: at least until graduation, for 24 months maximum), but:
- contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to scholarship holders for the periods (months) of the JMD (study / research / internship placement / thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence and will not be given to scholarship holders from partner countries for the time spent in partner countries exceeding three months.
All scholarship holders will receive an insurance meeting the minimum insurance requirements of the Erasmus+ programme for JMDs.

Following these regulations special cases in MARIHE are:
- Students with country of residency in Austria, Finland, China or GermanySubsistence costs (monthly allowances) will not be paid for the periods (months) of the JMD (study / research / internship placement / thesis preparation) spent in the respective country of residence. Example: A MARIHE student with Finland as country of residency prior to MARIHE programme will not receive monthly allowances during the second semester at University of Tampere and during the fourth semester (if the student spends the fourth semester in Finland).
- Partner country students with Chinese nationalityFor the lecture period/ the actual time spent in China (= 3 months, in the period from October to December in 3rd semester), partner country students with Chinese nationality will not receive monthly allowances from the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, as they spend the time in their country of nationality. This means that they will not receive monthly allowances for the three months October to December in 3rd semester.
- Only for student intakes before 2015: Students with last university degree from Austria or Finland
All Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders must spend their study period in at least two of the full partner institutions located in different European countries. For students that have started in MARIHE before 2015, these countries must be different from the country in which the scholarship holder has obtained his/her last university degree. Last university degree is defined as the last degree that was obtained before starting MARIHE programme in the respective student intake (this may be different to the "last degree" at the time of application deadline). For MARIHE this means that scholarship holders having started in MARIHE before 2015 and having obtained their last degree in Austria or Finland will spend their 4th semester at University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück in Germany (cf. section on mobility).
