University of Waikato Taught Postgraduate Scholarship for International Students in New Zealand, 2017



The University of Waikato is offering Taught Postgraduate Scholarship which is designed to support part and full-time students studying at postgraduate level. These Scholarships are open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international students.
The University of Waikato, informally Waikato University, is a comprehensive university in Hamilton, New Zealand, with a satellite campus located in Tauranga.
Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide satisfactory evidence of English language proficiency, generally in the form of an IELTS or TOEFL score.
Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue postgraduate (Taught) programme.
Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded to learn any of the courses offered by the university.
Scholarship Award: The value of the Scholarship will be:
a) Total 60 points = $3,000
b) Total 45 points = $2,250
c) Total 30 points = $1,500
d) Total 15 points = $750
  • Recipients may only receive funding for up to a maximum of 60 points in each application round.
  • The Scholarship will be applied to a recipient’s tuition fees in the year of scholarship tenure.
Scholarship can be taken in New Zealand
Eligibility: To be eligible applicants must be:
a) Enrolling in 500-level taught papers; OR
b) Enrolling in 400-level taught papers that are categorised as Level 8 under the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (see Appendix A).
  • Scholarships are awarded on academic merit, with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of A– expected. Normally, GPA calculations will be based on the equivalent of the applicant’s last two years of full-time study.
  • Past recipients may apply for subsequent Taught Postgraduate Scholarships if they continue to meet the eligibility criteria.
  • The Scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international students.
  • International students must have completed at least 120 points at any New Zealand University.
Nationality: The Scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international students.

Entrance Requirements: Scholarships are awarded on academic merit, with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of A– expected.
English language Requirements:  Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide satisfactory evidence of English language proficiency, generally in the form of an IELTS or TOEFL score. Scores can vary according to the qualification sought. If English is not first language applicant must provide one of the following as evidence of English language proficiency:
IELTS: Some qualifications require an overall band 6.5 and a Writing band 6.0. and some require 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band (7.0 overall for Graduate Diploma in Teaching with no less than 7.0 in each band. 7.0 for the Bachelor of Teaching with no less than 7.0 in each band. 7.5 for the Master of Teaching and Learning). The English language proficiency requirements for admission to particular qualifications are at the discretion of the Dean concerned.
TOEFL (internet based): 90 with a writing score of 22 (100 for Graduate Law)
TOEFL (paper-based): 577 overall including a TWE of 5.0 (100 overall and TWE of 5.5 for Graduate Law)
TOEFL (computer-based): 233 including a TWE of 5.0 (5.5 for Graduate Law).
